Portrait artistry has gone back a long way and come through some intense changes. Changes in how people feel about it and changes in how long a person needs to sit. I think that it's beautiful to take the time and study the face of someone to use your own hand to put them down on something that might just last a little longer then a relevant search history. Personally I get into a habit of doing these when I feel like I hate my original art.
