This is not something I actually wanted to do. I did not want to use acts of violence to justify my voice, but I see now that maybe my slanted view of the world might help. I call it a slanted view because it differs so much from so many. Many of you that know me, know me well enough to know that I am a non violent person. I do not dally in confrontation all that often. For the most part unless I am asked directly I hold my tongue.
Many of you are caught in wonder over the recent acts of violence that as far as I know are unknown in origin. So many of you are wondering what the world is coming to. You are shocked and appalled, and I understand. That is the appropriate reaction for a human being to have. It really is.
I too am shocked and appalled, but I have not sat and wondered what the world is coming to. My dear friends and family. I come to you out of love and understanding. I am not here single anyone out or to prove anything. I just want you to know that the world is not coming to some horrible existence. These are acts of terror, whether by a small group, one, or many. They are not a new thing, they are designed to instill fear, to change our way of life. If you allow them to change your view of the world then they are winning. Do not allow this, I implore you.
Let me remind you of the world before Boston, Texas, school shootings, etc. Please consider this when you wonder over the state of this great world we live upon. The events I am about to sight are well known, for the most part. I seek to remind you that there have always been evil people through out history, not just in the United States, but the world...and please keep in mind that human beings have overcome these things. We will always have things to overcome. Perfection is not in our nature.
In 1933 approximately ( I am not history buff), Jewish people were singled out as different, evil. Huge vile acts of violence where taken out upon them. I am not going to write an essay on it. You know what happened. You know it was horrible just as you know that the Jewish faith and race remains strong today. They persevered through will, luck and the kindness of strangers. People that knew they faced the same horrible punishments for helping that came from simply being born Jewish. They helped anyway. Many being caught, families torn apart, people tortured, and still there were the brave few that helped. Mind you, I am certain they did not feel at all brave.
In 1963 Martin Luther King Jr had a dream. Why did he have a dream? Because people like him were being mistreated because they were different. Crosses were burned in the front yards of those radical people of color. If they overstepped their boundaries they were subjected to individual acts of terror. Still they persisted, still they struggle to maintain equal footing, and someday they will. I would love to say they already have but there are still people that hold prejudices.
1651, the Apartheid. Dutch settlers arrive in south Africa and began exporting Africa's peoples as slaves. Of course they struggled against this. They struggled until 1963. They still suffer injustices I am sure, but things have indeed improved from the exportation of human beings as slaves.
1096, The Crusades. Men were absolved from their sins if only they would hunt out and kill infidels. These infidels being farmers, men, women, children that did not hold the same beliefs as their christian lord. Acts of cruel unjust violence, rape, murder, robbery...all in the name of god.
I can remember several acts of violence throughout history that have been overcome through good people. I am not going to sit here and note them because. for all of the time I have spent in history class and the all powerful google, I could go on forever.
Throughout time horrible, awful things have happened and we have improved. We have grown, we have survived and thrived as we are meant to do. Do not allow this sick people to slant your views, do not let them win. We as human beings haven't let the cruel and evil win yet and I for one am not about to. We stand strong, we live our lives as we always have, because in this we are fighting back. In this we are giving those who have suffered died and lost, meaning. We were built strong, able to survive, able to struggle, able to change.
I can not predict the next act of violence that may occur. Chances are it is happening as I type, and I hope that whoever this violence is being afflicted upon has the strength to fight back. I hope they make the challenge of breaking them hard. Just as I hope that the larger acts of violence, the ones that the media shoves in our faces does not break us. We will not break, we will not fall. Knock me down and I will get back up, and I will do so until you lack the strength to do it again.
